JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Jacksonville Sheriff's Officer was found dead Friday in his police car.
Ed Krawczyk was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound early Friday morning in the parking lot in front of JSO, according to Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Undersheriff Dwain Senterfitt.
Officers became concerned when Krawczyk did not return from his shift and initiated a search around 4 a.m., Senterfitt said.
46-year-old Krawczyk, according to Senterfitt, was a 20-year veteran with JSO.
Senterfitt also said, "he [Krawczyk] had been battling cancer for five to six years," and "had come back a time or two," following treatment.
"It hurts, it's a big family, we all know him," added Senterfitt in a mournful statement. "We all hurt when someone in our family is hurting."
JSO deputies are with the Krawczyk family Friday morning to offer comfort during this difficult time. Krawczyk leaves behind his wife Susan, two sons, Kristopher and Daniel and a daughter.
An investigation is ongoing.
