JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It's an area that has seen shops come and go in the last year. These business owners say they are hoping to stay, and make more money.
It's a day that can make or break a local business: Small Business Saturday.
"People are aware of small businesses and what we do for the community, and for each other," said Ana Hernandez of the All Spiced Up shop in San Marco.
Ana Hernandez just moved her All Spiced Up shop to San Marco in June. Just as major retailers live for Black Friday, she's been planning for this day for a very long time.
"We don't have the advertising dollars to do that kind of promotion," Hernandez said.
While small business Saturday doesn't have nearly the draw of Black Friday, it's picking up momentum.
Last year, more than 100 million people hit local shops during the one day event.
"I'd rather shop leisurely on a Saturday where you can get that more individualized attention," said one shopper.
Leaving some customers wondering why not shop local the other 364 days of the year.
"It stays in the community, and a lot of times, there's more personal service," another shopper said.
Hernandez hopes this day will also be an opportunity for her to showcase the other local businesses she supports at her shop.
"What I try to do is bring in local honeys, local hot sauces, barbecue sauces. So I try to support other businesses in my store as well," Hernandez said.
One study shows when you shop local and spend 100-dollars, 68 of that stays in our community, versus 43-dollars at national chains.
