COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- An undercover operation by the Columbia County Sheriff's Office into an 11-year-old girl receiving obscene text messages resulted in the arrest of a 23-year-old man.
Police began their investigation in October when the girl reported receiving the obscene messages, Sergeant Ed Seifert, Public Information Officer for the Columbia County Sheriff's Office said
Detectives began to communicate with the person sending the obscene messages through both text messages and social media outlets. Seifert said during the communications a detective posed as the 11-year-old.
For several weeks the detective communicated with the person sending sexually explicit messages. Seifert said during the conversations the man believed he was talking to the 11-year-old girl. Seifert said the purpose of the man's conversation was to engage in sex acts with the girl.
On November 6 the detective, still posing as the girl, agreed to meet the obscene texter at the Columbia County Library.
While the detective waited for the man to show up, police were also waiting, Seifert said.
Detectives saw Daniel Long, 33, actively texting with the detective, telling her he was there waiting for her.
Police arrested Long, charging him with two counts of obscene communications. Deputies transported Long to the Columbia County Detention Facility where he is being held on no bond.
