COCOA BEACH, Fla. -- All the participants were winners in the Ron Jon Special Olympics State Surfing Championships held last weekend in Cocoa Beach.

Seven counties turned out to ride waves and share fun and sportsmanship. The event took place at Sheppard Park.

A release from Surf USA said the athletes stepped it up this year and that the competitiveness of each athlete made the sport more official.

Duval County was represented by 15 athletes. Duval took home gold, silver and bronze medals in many divisions the release said.

Florida Surfing Association Director Paul West said, "I was struck by two strong thoughts. First, the athletes, their intensity, focus and stoke is unmatched in any sport i have personally witnessed.  Second, the sincere, heartfelt passion that was shown by the coaches and instructors. You guys are truly an inspiration."

Before participating in the competition, athletes took part in an eight-week surf training program.
