Vilano Beach Main Street wins award

VILANO BEACH, Fla. -- The Vilano Beach Publix Supermarket has received the Florida State Main Street Award for Outstanding New Construction.

There are more than 40 statewide Main Street Programs in Florida according to a release from Vilano Beach Main Street Waterfronts Town Center Partnership Group.

Vilano Beach used the Town Center concept to redevelop their town founded in the 1920s into a small beach community.

Plans for Vilano Beach began development in 1997 and was expected to develop over a15-year period the release said.

Under the redevelopment plan, the city built new streetscapes which included infrastructure and stormwater management, established overlay design guidelines and built bookend pavilions.  The pavilions serve as the two ends of Main Street in Vilano Beach.

Publix, which the release said was the number one community wish, was added to the community when the community dedicated the art-deco building January 12, 2012.

The release said the award  recognizes the sense of place the "beautiful structure adds to the Vilano Beach Main Street."

Vilano Beach will be the host location for the conference for the Florida Main Street Program in 2013.
