JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Gather is a newly launched app that allows you to create small meet-ups with friends nearby.

The idea is that you share your intended plans with friends on Facebook and Twitter before you arrive and check-in, allowing friends to see what you have planned before you get there.

Gather will post directly to your Facebook or Twitter accounts, so there's no need to check in on multiple apps. This is also handy in that it centralizes friends' plans so you don't have to check their Twitter or Facebook feeds to see what they're up to. If a friend is nearby, you simply receive a push notification.

Gather does not replace Meet-Up since it's really only something you share with friends and your own personal circle.
