ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. - Detectives with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office made an arrest Wednesday morning in relation to an unsolved murder case from 2007.

Clark Edwin McWhorter's body was discovered in the roadway on Coastal Highway in Guana State Park on January 28, 2007, according to a news release from the SJSO. An autopsy revealed the victim died from a single gunshot wound, the release states.

After receiving tips from witnesses, detectives discovered that 34-year-old Phillip Carl Pomper of Jacksonville allegedly had specific knowledge of the incident.

With the assistance of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and the United States Marshals Service, officials with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office were able to locate Pomper at an address on Tempo Drive, the news release states.

According to the release, during an interview, Pomper allegedly admitted to his involvement in McWhorter's death. The information he provided led detectives to believe the murder was completely random and unprovoked.

Pomper is being charged with first degree murder and was booked this morning into the Duval County Jail. According to the news release, detectives are not seeking additional suspects in this case.
