Suwannee County Deputy Killed in Off-Duty Accident

SUWANNEE COUNTY, Fla - Suwannee County Deputy Gary Edwards, 43, has died from his injuries after being in an accident Saturday night near Live Oak.

A car driven by Pedro Leyva ran into the rear of Edward's pickup truck while traveling northbound on State Road 51 at 10:10 p.m. Edwards' truck went out of control, went off the right shoulder and struck a utility pole. The Florida Highway Patrol says Edwards was not wearing a seatbelt.

Leyva, 53, was not injured and was placed under arrest for DUI with serious bodily injury.

Edwards was a resource officer at Suwannee County Middle School.
