5 injured when semi truck slams into building

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A semi truck crashed into a building in the New Town area of Jacksonville Wednesday afternoon.

Five people were injured, including one child, when a Coca-Cola tractor trailer crashed into a building in the 1300 block of Beaver Street at North Myrtle Avenue. Selena Thomas' brother was inside Discount Seafood working at the fish market Wednesday when the semi crashed into the building on West Beaver Street and caused it to partially collapse.

"I just began to pray. My brother is a Christian man and I just began to pray and ask God. I heard that 5 other people were injured and just praying that they were all covered," Thomas said.

Her brother was taken to the hospital to be checked out.

"At least 2 people were inside the commercial structure at the time the truck came in. Neither one of those were injured. They were transported. They came out the back door. No one had to be extricated. We didn't have anyone trapped," said a spokesperson for JFRD.

Jacksonville Fire and Rescue says the 18 wheeler ended up here after colliding with a JTA bus. Four passengers on board the bus were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. JFRD says the truck spilled 30 to 40 gallons of diesel.

Responders said it could have been worse. Usually there are 3-4 people sitting around the outside the fish, JFRD said.

When Coleman Yarborough, the owner of Discount Seafood, arrived at his business he saw the destruction.

"Not a good feeling," Yarborough said.

East and west bound Beaver Street were closed at North Myrtle following the crash.
