16-year-old felon charged in shooting 12-year-old

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 16-year-old was arrested in the Thursday afternoon shooting of a 12-year-old on the Westside.

The teen was charged with aggravated battery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and discharging a firearm in public, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police say the victim and suspect knew each other. During the investigation, the 12-year-old referred to his shooter by a nickname.

Investigators were able to identify, locate and arrest the suspect based on further details provided by the victim's family.

During a background check, police confirmed the suspect received a felony conviction in May of 2014 and has an outstanding warrant from Clay County for burglary and grand theft.

The 12-year-old is reported to be recovering with non-life threatening injuries.
