1 person dead after car plunges into river

PALATKA, Fla. -- One person is dead and another is recovering after their car plunged into the St. Johns River near Brown's Landing Road (boat ramp) Wednesday night.

An 80-year-old driver, later identified as Francis Edward Sheehan, was heading southbound on Brown's Landing Rd. around 10:30 p.m when for unknown reasons failed to stop at the dead end of the road and drove into the river.

As the car was sinking, 55-year-old Anita Darlene Craig was able to escape through the window and swim to safety. Sheehan tried to exit the car but was last seen sinking with the vehicle.

Sheehan was found by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office dive team, a few yards in front of the car.

Craig sustained minor injuries.

No charges are pending, according to FHP.
