Local man found passed out in hotel room with young children present

A 37-year old St. Johns County man was arrested Monday afternoon for several charges including possession of heroin and child neglect.

Police say the suspect, Jason Scott Atkins, was charged with possession of heroin, maintaining a drug dwelling, two counts of child neglect w/out great bodily harm, possession of controlled substance without a prescription, possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana, possession of less than 3 grams of THC and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police say Atkins was booked into the St. Johns County Jail where he remains in lieu of bonds totaling $518,000 following a first appearance hearing. 

The investigation began when officers with the St. Augustine Beach Police Department responded to a report of an unconscious male at a room of the Holiday Isle Hotel at 860 A1A Beach Monday shortly after 5:00 p.m.

St. Johns County Fire Rescue was able to revive the unconscious male who was then transported to Flagler Hospital for further treatment.

Officer’s made contact with two more adult males who were in the room at the time. Both males were questioned and one was arrested on several felony criminal charges after various drugs and paraphernalia were located in the room.

The Department of Children and Families was contacted as well due to the fact young children were present and the investigation is continuing.
