JACKSONVILLE, FL -- October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to research by Susan G. Komen for the Cure, more than 40,400 women and 450 men will die from breast cancer this year. The disease affects just about everyone.
You can donate and help find a cure by doing something as simple as buying a bagel. Panera Bread is supporting this special month by selling a unique bagel. It is a Pink Ribbon Bagel.
The bagel went on sale during the month of September. During October, 25 cents from each one sold will go towards research to find a cure.
Raquel Montgomery, General Manager for Panera, told First Coast News of her company's first franchisees and a breast cancer survivor came up with the idea of selling the Pink Ribbon Bagel in 2001 as a way to help support the cause.
Last year, the 12 Panera stores in Jacksonville raised nearly $4,000 in one month. Montgomery says the goal this year is to raise $5,000 to help fund research and find a cure.
Renay Daigle, a breast cancer survivor, believes every little bit helps. "I purposely patronize things that support breast cancer research." Daigle was diagnosed with the disease in 2002. She was 32-years-old and pregnant at the time.
Daigle told us breast cancer does not run in her family. It was by accident she discovered her tumor. "I was mowing the lawn and hit myself in the chest with the lawn mower pull. The bruise went away, but I noticed there was a lump there." She was 4 months along in her pregnancy at that point.
She went to the doctor and was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 6 months pregnant with her second child. She said she had one breast removed right away. She did give birth to a healthy little girl. But eleven days after having her, she started chemotherapy.
Daigle says she talks openly with her two daughters, now 9 and 5 1/2, about the disease. She is glad something as simple as buying a bagel will help the cause. Daigle believes there will be a cure, and soon.
Panera Bread will contribute funds from the sale of the Pink Ribbon Bagel for the entire month of October. Employees will also support the Komen North Florida Race for the Cure. They will hand out 3,000 mini Pink Ribbon Bagels at the race October 18th.
The special bagels are $1.25 at the Jacksonville stores. A quarter from each one will go to a good cause.
