Doctors warn of Forgotten Baby Syndrome

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Doctors are warning that Forgotten Baby Syndrome causes a memory lapse that could potentially lead to a deadly outcome.

One Yulee mother, Michelle King, called 911 in panic-mode after leaving her baby in the car seat for four hours. The car was 111 degrees, according to authorities. King is charged with child neglect.

So far this year, two children were rescued from hot cars in Northeast Florida.

Doctor Mobeen Rathore, MD, is the president of the Duval County Medical Society.

"I think most of the situations happen when someone forgets a child in a vehicle in the heat of the summer," said Rathore.

Rathore says this happens as a result of Forgotten Baby Syndrome.

"It's a name given to a person who leaves a child in the car and it can happen to anyone parent or grandparent," said Rathore. "I mean, it's so easy to do this."

Over the past decade, says there have been at least 388 children who have died of vehicular heatstroke and 16 so far in 2014.

Rathore recommends parents take one of their shoes off and leave it in the back seat, as a reminder.

Rathore said, "[This works] because you are not going to leave the car with one shoe, maybe both shoes you would, but not one shoe."

Other tricks include leaving your purse or brief case in the back seat. also suggests keeping a large stuffed animal in the child's car seat when they aren't there. Then, when the child is in the car, put the stuffed animal in the front seat as a reminder.

Once Upon a Child store owner, Mary Weber, says she has seen parents leave their children in their cars on numerous occasions.

Weber said, "Everyone once in a while, we have a parent who comes in and they leave their child because they are sleeping or they don't want to bring them in."

Weber says this happens about two or three times a month, on average.

"We have had other parents come in and say there is a child outside in a car, do you know who it belongs to?" said Weber. "[This is] because, they are worried!"
