JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Dr. Ray Pomm, an addiction psychiatrist said to beware of a drug popping up at pain clinics in Jacksonville. It's called Dilaudid. Pomm, the Medical Director at River Region treatment center, said pain doctors are pushing it hard now.
Pomm says it's a powerful narcotic and highly addictive. He says River Region has seen an increase of abuse of Dilaudid over the past few months.
Pomm said Dilaudid is being prescribed more and more because pain clinics realize that Oxycontin, once so popular, has gotten a bad rap. A few other drugs, as well, have gotten such bad publicity that patients shy away from them. Therefore, the pain clinics, Pomm said, are trying to push something different.
Pomm and other addiction experts say to remember that prescription painkillers have the potential to hook you within a couple weeks in some cases.
Plus, prescription painkillers mixed with alcohol or drugs such as Valium, can turn treacherous, even deadly.
Obviously, some people get help from prescription painkillers. But watch out, Pomm says.
