JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- You may be wondering why you're even reading this article. It can't happen to you, right? But that innocent little pain pill from the dentist or that bottle of pills for your hurting back could take control of your life.
Here are the top 5 risk factors for getting addicted to prescription medicine. This list comes from Dr. John Tanner and Dr. Ray Pomm, addiction experts in Jacksonville.
MORE INFORMATION: VISIT OUR HEALTH FORUM
#1: You have addictions in your family to drugs or booze. ("Family" means a mom, dad, brother or sister.)
#2: Someone in your family has an anxiety disorder or depression or is bipolar.
#3: You smoke pot right now several times a week.
#4: You were abused as a child.
#5: You have an addiction to sex or food.
What if you can relate to a risk factor? What if someone you care about can?
First, make sure all prescription medication bottles are locked up.
Second, if you think you see a problem, get help before it's too late.
Some people, experts say, become addicted within a couple weeks. Others take pain pills without any trouble. Others get hooked without any of the above risk factors.
All this week Jeannie Blaylock and FCN are looking at the addiction to prescription pills in the special report, "Beast In a Bottle." Friday, February 22nd, we'll have a phone panel of experts you can call for advice. You can call between 5 and 6:30 pm to 904-632-1200.
