ATLANTA -- A driver accused of seriously injuring an Atlanta police officer says he wasn't trying to flee.
Police officer Osbert Beckles was working traffic near a ramp for Interstate 75 about 11:30 p.m. Friday when a car slammed into the officer's patrol vehicle. The driver, 45-year-old Eugene Welker, was charged with driving under the influence, serious injury by motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident and other traffic-related offenses.
WXIA-TV reports that Welker told a judge Saturday that he didn't try to flee. He said he was just walking to the end of the interstate off ramp. The station also reported that Welker is on probation for federal wire fraud charges. Welker's bond is set at $58,000.
The officer was hospitalized with head and chest injuries and broken bones.
