SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Health officials are urging Savannah area residents to take precautions after preliminary tests detected mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus.
The Chatham County Health Department said Thursday preliminary tests also detected the mosquito-borne disease Easter Equine Encephalitis, but officials emphasized no human cases of either illness have been reported this summer.
Officials say residents should frequently change water in outdoor pet dishes, birth baths and other containers where mosquitoes can breed in standing water. They also advised wearing long sleeves and long pants - or at least insect repellent - when outdoors at dusk and dawn, the times mosquitoes are most likely to bite.
