SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The board for the Georgia Ports Authority has elected a Savannah businessman to serve as chairman of the board.

The authority said in a statement that Robert S. Jepson Jr. was elected to the position on Monday.

Jepson was first appointed to the authority's board of directors in 2008 by former Gov. Sonny Perdue and previously served as vice chairman. He is the chairman and chief executive officer of Jepson Associates Inc., a private investment firm he founded in 1989.

Jepson will follow Alec L. Poitevint II, who served as Georgia Ports Authority chairman of the board for the past two years.

Jepson said under his watch, the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project will remain the top priority.
