FORT STEWART, Ga. -- Prosecutors say a Fort Stewart soldier charged with killing two of his Army roommates waited to open fire until they were preparing for bed.
Capt. Frank Kostik told a military jury during closing arguments Tuesday that Spc. Neftaly Platero shot the slain soldiers in the side and in the back at their base camp in Iraq. One of them, Pfc. Gebrah Noonan, had just come in from a shower. The other, Spc. John Carrillo Jr., was rummaging through a backpack with a flashlight.
Platero faces life in prison if a court-martial convicts him of premeditated murder in the 2010 slayings. His attorney, Guy Womack, told jurors the absence of gunshot residue on Platero's hands points to someone else being the shooter.
The jury was to begin deliberations Tuesday afternoon.
