WARNER ROBINS, Ga. (AP) - Gov. Nathan Deal's office says he supports using some state funds to help with a multi-million dollar buyout of middle Georgia homes that officials say are too close to Robins Air Force Base.
The Telegraph of Macon reports that the Defense Department wants residents out of the area north of the base because its considered a "crash zone" for aircraft. Local officials want to avoid becoming a target of future base closings.
A Deal spokeswoman, Stephanie Mayfield, says the state "is committed to helping" with buying out homeowners. House Majority Leader Larry O'Neal, a Bonaire Republican, says he wants $7 to $10 million in state funding to add to the total $13 million being put up locally by Bibb and Houston Counties.
