FWC: Watch out, bears waking up from slumber

Black bears are on the move in Florida.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, bears will soon be leaving their winter dens to roam -- and they are hungry.

"Now is the time to expect bears to show up looking for food," said Dave Telesco, who directs the FWC's bear management program. "If they can't find food in your neighborhood, they'll move on."

The FWC warns that some black bears will be traveling with cubs and maybe become aggressive in an attempt to defend them.

Bear Tips from FWC:

- Keep garbage, birdseed and pet food secure

- Use bear resistant trashcan

- Never approach a bear

- Keep dogs away from bears, dogs can trigger defensive behavior

- Slow down when driving to avoid bears

Last year over 200 Florida bears were killed by vehicles, according to FWC.
