ORANGE COUNTY, FL -- Hours after Senator Bill Nelson celebrated a convincing win over Katherine Harris for the U.S. Senate, Orlando police arrested his son.
Charles Nelson, 30, is accused of battery on a law enforcement officer, disorderly intoxication, and resisting arrest.
The charges are all felonies.
A patrol officer on a bike found Nelson standing on a street corner talking to another person, with a woman slumped over on the ground.
The officer asked Nelson if the woman was okay.
Nelson said, "She is fine, I'll take her to the hotel," according to the police report.
The police officer detected the odor of alcohol and called the Orlando Fire Department Paramedics to assess the woman on the ground, identified by police as Kimberly Baxter.
That's when Nelson, according to police, tried to pick Baxter up and take her to the hotel.
The officer asked Nelson to put her down.
The officer said Nelson dropped her to the ground.
Her head, according to police, came within two inches of hitting the metal base of a traffic signal.
Police say the officer put his hand on Nelson's shoulder, ordering him to leave.
Police say Nelson put his hands on the officer, pushed him away, stating, "No, you need to leave!"
The police officer then told Nelson he was under arrest. The officer said Nelson made it difficult to get handcuffs on him, even rolling around on the ground at times with the officer hanging on.
The officer shot a burst of pepper spray into Nelson's face to get him into handcuffs.
