PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. -- Florida Panhandle police say an Alabama woman has died days after helping her daughter and her daughter's friends escape a rip current in the Gulf of Mexico.

Sonia Westmoreland of Hartselle, Ala., died Wednesday. Police tell The News Herald that the 42-year-old was pulled from the waters off Panama City Beach around 7:30 p.m. Sunday and taken to a hospital.

Witnesses said Westmoreland had gone into the water to help her daughter and her daughter's friends after they caught in a rip current. The girl and her friends returned to shore safely.

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
