Florida law makers cracking down on misuse of EBT cards

(NBC-2) -- Twenty-six new Florida laws go into effect this weekend. One of them deals with food stamps and it's something everyone needs to know.

The law deals with EBT cards, which are a high-tech version of food stamps used all across the state. In Southwest Florida, 74,000 households receive food stamps.

“There are so many people out there who actually need the help,” Naples resident Jonathan Fitzpatrick said.

Sometimes people are taking advantage of the benefits. People have been caught trafficking their EBT cards, or selling them. Now, a new law aims to make sure that doesn't happen by making it a more serious crime.

“It kind of hurts a little deep because I’m a local business owner and I pay my fair share of taxes. There are plenty of people out there who could be using it in the right and correct way that actually need it,” Fitzpatrick said.
