FHP: Lake County man high on meth during deadly hit-and-run in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A Lake County man was high on methamphetamine last October when he fled the scene of two crashes, one of them deadly, on Interstate 95 in Jacksonville, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Keith Wade Harris, 50, of Lady Lake was arrested Monday on charges of vehicular homicide, DUI-manslaughter, DUI-causing serious bodily injury, DUI-causing property damage and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

Harris was seen speeding and weaving on southbound I-95 near Kings Road about 1 a.m. Oct. 9, 2016, when his pickup truck rear-ended a Toyota Corolla and propelled it into a guardrail, according to his arrest report. The Toyota’s driver, 21-year-old La’Shaun Diane Ealey, was killed on impact and her passenger, 19-year-old Sha’Kemba Armani Hoover, was injured.

Harris drove off and was seen vomiting out of the window while driving before his pickup ricocheted off a guardrail, a tree and two fences near the Stockton Street exit ramp, according to the report. It said Harris, who ditched the car, was later found hiding inside a vacant home.

Blood samples collected at the scene showed Harris was under in the influence of methamphetamine, according to the report.

Harris remains in custody at the Duval County jail in lieu of $330,000 bail.
