SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- Evangelical Christians from across Brazil have clogged the streets of Sao Paulo for the annual "March for Jesus."
The huge rally was started by a Brazilian couple who built a religious empire but are now under house arrest in Florida for allegedly trying to smuggle cash into the United States. Religious music blared from sound trucks as the faithful shouted support for their leaders.
Brazilian authorities say the couple used parishioners' donations to buy mansions and horse farms in Brazil and the United States. The couple's Reborn-in-Christ Church calls those allegations "religious persecution."
