JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Syona Rai loves to help her classmates.
"To me, leadership means ... I like to guide my friends and help them with every problem they have in there," Rai explained.
The fourth-grader at Bartram Springs Elementary takes an active role in school, not only in class but also as an anchor for the school's morning broadcast.
In the classroom, her favorite subject is writing.
"Whatever comes through here goes on the paper," Rai said, gesturing at her head. "All my teachers have really helped me and especially my teacher right now, she's really helping me in writing and I've learned to express my emotions."
"She's one of those students that helps others by leading and being an example," said Jessica Panchula, Rai's writing teacher.
Panchula said Syona helps others without being asked and does things without having to be told.
"She steps in and guides those that are struggling or need additional support, and that's something that (9- and 10-year-olds), they don't do and Syona has those characteristics," Rai said.
Panchula said the teachers and Syona's peers are very proud of her.
