FCAT glitch resolved says Fla. Commissioner of Education

UPDATE: The issue stopping students from logging in and taking this year's Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test has been resolved, said Florida Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart said in a statement to superintendents across the state.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Several Florida school districts are having trouble administering the state's standardized test because of a computer glitch.

The Florida Department of Education said testing contractor Pearson is having difficulty with a hosting provider causing students problems accessing the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. In an email to superintendents, the department said the issue didn't appear to be statewide.

On the First Coast, Nassau County School District schools and charter schools in Duval County were affected. Duval County Public Schools, St. Johns School District schools and Clay County District Schools were not affected by the glitch.

Florida Education Association President Andy Ford made these comments about the problems today with administering the state's high-stakes FCAT test:

"Today's computer problems associated with administering the FCAT test prove yet again that the state is not prepared for such a large undertaking. The state is unbending in its requirements of students, teachers and public schools when it comes to these high stakes tests and unyielding in the punitive impacts they have on students, teachers and schools. But when it comes to administering or grading these tests, problems continue to bubble to the surface with alarming regularity. This should be a teachable moment for The Florida Department of Education as they enter a new era of testing next year: Slow down, make sure every aspect of the testing program works, involve teachers and administrators in this massive undertaking and get it right."

Currently, there is not an estimated timeline from Pearson for when the issue will be resolved.

"Pearson's online testing services for Florida experienced internet traffic disruptions today due to a network issue with our third-party hosting service provider, Savvis. We are working closely with Savvis to remedy the situation as soon as possible. Even with the disruption, which did present difficulties for some school districts, many students are testing normally with almost 200,000 tests delivered today," said Stacy Skelly, Director of Media Relations for Pearson.
