JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Summer school is underway for young students who need extra help with their reading skills.
For the first time, a six-week session is being held for kindergarten, first and second graders who demonstrated on tests they are not reading on grade level.
"We are getting some push back and that is to be expected because it's a new policy that has not been in place," said Kathy LeRoy, the district's Academic Officer.
"If we don't have our children reading early on grade level, they are going to struggle all the way through," she said.
On Monday, the district expects 2,700 students at 12 schools hosting summer reading programs. Transportation is being provided to students required to shore up their reading skills.
Students must attend 25 days of the 29-day session. Promotion to the next grade is tied to students attending summer reading school.
