JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- For all the budget issues the public school system has faced in the past year, which included the potential to end all sports programs, the district has received top marks for keeping its financial house in order.
The accounting firm of Cherry, Bekaert & Holland, L.L.P. gave the Duval County Public Schools an "unqualified opinion" in an audit presented to the board Tuesday.
The opinion is the "highest level of assurance an independent CPA is allowed to give," according to Cherry, Bekaert & Holland Partner James Burdick, who added the district has "quality financial staff."
"It is extremely important for us to have the highest degree of accountability for all of our financial transactions," said Duval schools Chief Financial Officer Michael Perrone.
A news release from school district spokesperson Jill Johnson details the findings of the audit:
- No financial findings, second consecutive year
- No significant deficiencies, material weaknesses of noncompliance in the report on internal controls and compliance
- Unqualified opinion for Federal Awards compliance
