(FloridaToday) -- Taking shelter from the storm is a crucial component to any hurricane or emergency preparedness plan.
Residents are also urged to bring an emergency-supply kit packed with medical supplies, prescription pills, shoes and blankets.
Those with special medical needs will need to register with the county to be assigned to undisclosed shelters that will provide specialized care, said Kimberly Prosser, director of Brevard Emergency Management.
Shelter openings are incident-specific. Never go to a shelter unless local officials have announced it is open.
If ordered, evacuate immediately and follow these instructions:
• Stay tuned to battery-powered radios and follow instructions.
• Wear protective clothing and sturdy shoes.
