Cruise ships rerouted due to Hurricane Matthew

Carnival changes cruise schedule

Carnival Cruise Line announces changes to voyage routes in wake of Hurricane Matthew.

In an email to First Coast News, Carnival states passengers planning to depart Jacksonville on Elation, Monday Oct. 3rd,  will no longer visit Half Moon Cay and Nassau but will head to Key West and Freeport instead.

The changes come as Matthew, a category 4 hurricane, churns in the Caribbean threatening Jamaica, Haiti and parts of Cuba.

Carnival released a statement: "Given the unpredictability of tropical weather systems, and with guest and crew safety as our foremost priority, we are taking a prudent course of action to keep the ship out of harm's way and provide our guests with a safe and enjoyable vacation experience."

The itineraries of Carnival ships Ecstasy, Pride, Victory, and Splendor were also modified.

Carnival says the ship Elation will head north and maintain a safe distance from the storm.
