COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. - A White Springs man is in custody after allegedly attempting to cash a check drawn on the account of a deceased person.
Deputies said they found Ray W. Newby, 53, on a bicycle in the drive-thru at the Columbia County Bank branch located at 1720 U.S. 90 West, according to a release from the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.
Bank employees told deputies they know the deceased customer and alerted them when Newby allegedly attempted to cash a $300 check from the account, the release detailed.
Newby admitted to forging the deceased customer's signature, deputies said.
Detectives are currently investigating whether Newby has cashed checks that aren't his before.
Newby has been charged with uttering a forged instrument, grand theft and fraud and is currently being held on a $15,000 bond.
