JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two teens were shot Sunday afternoon while standing on a Brentwood neighborhood sidewalk.
"It really hurts me to see this," said Nikki Jenkins who has made her home in the Brentwood neighborhood. She has called the area home for 35 years.
"These adults. A lot of their children are raising their children the same way they are. Not to have any respect for authority. Not to have any respect for each other," she said Sunday evening.
The teens, ages 16 and 18, were standing on the sidewalk in the 4200 block of Springfield Boulevard when an unknown suspect walked up and fired 8-10 shots at them, said JSO Lt. George Grant.
"I'm just worried," said neighbor, Gwendolyn Kempt.
After the shooting, Kempt said her thoughts went directly to her family. She said she was worried about her family getting hurt.
"I have one get on the bus every morning. My grandchildren run out in that yard right there."
One of the victims was shot in the chest and the other was shot in the hand and leg. Both victims were taken to the UF Health. The victim who was shot in the chest in critical condition, Grant said. The teen shot in the hand and leg suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The shooting brought back painful memories for Elizabeth, who would not give her last name. She has also lived in the Brentwood neighborhood for 35 years.
"It all flashes back to when my son got killed almost 10 years ago on the other end of Springfield [Boulevard]," she said.
Elizabeth told FCN that her 26-year-old son was shot to death in 2004. She told FCN her son was shot about a block away form where Sunday's shooting happened.
"The boy told him when he see him again, he's going to kill him, and he did," she said.
Jenkins said while Sunday's shooting is tragic, she hopes it can be a turning point for the community. She stressed what she believes is the importance of faith and something else.
"They could get together and be discussing it instead of shooting at each other," Jenkins said. "It's ridiculous."
The suspect fled on foot. No description has been released by JSO.
