Suspect in officer shooting appears in court

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Donald Goins, 33, appeared in court Thursday at 1 p.m. in connection with a police-involved shooting that left one officer injured.

According to Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Undersheriff Dwain Senterfitt, Officer Andrew Benson was conducting a traffic stop on Edison Avenue. He attempted to stop Goins for not wearing a seat belt, but Goins continued driving north on Cherokee Street.

Goins stopped a few blocks later and allegedly fired multiple shots out his window. Benson took cover in his car and shot back. The officer sustained a gunshot wound to the arm, Senterfitt said.

Goins left the scene in the vehicle. A few hours later, police arrested Goins in the Springfield area for attempted murder of a police officer and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Goins also had an active warrant for domestic battery, according to court documents.

Senterfitt said Goins received a ride to the Springfield area. Officers are interested in speaking with that person or anyone who has information pertaining to this ongoing case.
