Stepmom charged with hiding gun used in death of 15-year-old

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The stepmother of a 15-year-old found shot and killed Sunday is behind bars.

Christy Marie Files, 29, told police Sunday that someone had shot her step-son, Bryant Matthew Scott Layfield, while he was in the backyard of a home in the 4400 block of Melvin Circle Sunday night, according to a police report form the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Files claimed she saw two suspects fleeing from the yard, over her fence.

Files also allegedly gave police consent to search her home, which turned up a bloodied .22 caliber long rifle which was located in Files attic, the report detailed.

In follow up interviews with police Files allegedly admitted Layfield was accidentally shot inside her home. She also admitted to putting the rifle in the attic to hide it from police and made up the story of the fleeing suspects, according to the report.

Files was arrested and charged with evidence tampering with or fabricating. She is currently being held in the Duval County Jail on a $50,003 bond.
