St. Johns County death investigation could be connected to deadly crash

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office is working with Florida Highway Patrol to determine whether a death investigation early Tuesday morning is connected with a deadly crash Monday evening.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's office says foul play is likely in the death of a man in his 50's in a home in the 1400 block of Los Robles. Authorities made that determination based on evidence found, or not found, at the scene.

Deputies went to the home just after midnight after a friend called and said she couldn't get in touch with the man. When they went into the home, deputies found the man dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

He has not been identified, pending family notification.

Looking into the victim's background, investigators learned the victim had moved into his home recently, and his roommate, Steven Canard, 55, had died in a car crash on Monday evening.

“Those vehicles were secured as part of [FHP's] traffic homicide investigation," Commander Chuck Mulligan with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said.

"We now have an interest in at least one of those vehicles, with Mr. Canard, to see if there’s any connections between the two cases as we stand here today.”

The Sheriff's Office are partnering with Florida Highway Patrol in the investigation.
