Sheriff David Shoar, FOP pledge $400 to Girl Scouts following theft

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A 22-year-old man is in jail after he allegedly stole money from a group of Girl Scouts.

Deputies with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office responded to the Publix in the 4200 block of U.S. 1 Wednesday afternoon after witnesses reported a man on a bike stole a money bag from a group of Girl Scouts selling cookies outside the store, according to a police report from the SJCSO.

The suspect had been sitting on a bench behind the Girl Scouts as they sold cookies. When the girls started packing up for the day, the suspect allegedly walked up to the table and grabbed the Girl Scouts' money bag, the report detailed.

The suspect fled the scene on a bicycle with $400 in cookie money.

A follow up investigation Thursday led detectives to 22-year-old Edmund Randolph Allen, Jr. A witness also identified Allen in a photo lineup.

Allen was found in a shed behind a home in the 100 block of Phonetia Drive with another suspect who was arrested on charges not related to the Girl Scouts theft. Allen is facing charges of larceny, marijuana possession and drug equipment charges and is currently being held on a $3500 bond.

Allen's priors include charges of failure to appear, larceny, dealing in stolen property and probation violation.

Several local businesses and individuals have reached out to donate monies to the Girl Scout Troop, according to the SJCSO. Additionally, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge (#113) President, Chris Acosta; as well as Sheriff David Shoar, have each pledged $400.00 donations to the group. Sheriff Shoar stated, "The monies in this case cannot be recovered due to the actions of the arrested individual. I am pleased that the collective law enforcement community made a donation through our local lodge, and I am honored to make a personal donation to this group of girls, who are making a difference in our community."
