School bus driver accused of molesting student

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. — An Orange County school bus driver remains in jail, accused of molesting a student he met on his school bus.

Javier Mendez was arrested Friday night after he went to the Winder Garden police station and told officers he wanted to register as a sex offender for molesting a student who rode his school bus.

According to the arrest report, Mendez would leave his home at the Promenade and take about a 5-mile trip to meet the student at a church off of Hemple Road.

Because the alleged sexual act took place in Orange County, Orange County sheriff's deputies took over the case.

During the investigation, the student admitted to participating in the sexual acts with Mendez willingly.

Mendez told investigators that he met the student in August of 2012 but the relationship did not become physical until a year later in August of 2013.

At that time, Mendez told investigators he started exchanging nude photos with the student via text message and on Facebook. The arrest report notes that during one of their meetings Mendez even brought his 7-year-old daughter along.

Neighbors inside the apartment community where Mendez lives said they would have never expected this from him.

Mendez is still in jail and charged with lewd molestation, which carries a $2,500 bond.

Orange County school officials have not been officially made aware of the charges against Mendez. Once they are, his employment with the district will be in question.

Mendez has been a school bus driver since 2008.
