Paraplegic man steals car from dealership

A paraplegic Florida man was arrested after police say he stole a car from a dealership then led officers on a brief chase through three counties.

Shamal Ike Battice, 28, was arrested Wednesday night after he took a 2009 Pontiac G6 from the Ford of Ocala dealership, according to the Ocala Star-Banner.

Authorities said a salesman helped Battice get into the car, but once inside he locked the doors, started it up and drove away using a folding cane on the gas pedal.

The dealership called police and deputies in Marion and Alachua counties pursued the Pontiac before Battice was finally arrested by Bradford County Sheriff's deputies as he tried to put gas in the car at a gas station, authorities said.

Battice is facing a possible charge of grand theft auto. Jail records showed he was being held without bond Friday, and it was unknown whether he has an attorney.

The salesman who was helping Battice when he took off said he was stunned.

"It was unbelievable, only in the movies," Anselmo "Chico" Barreto told the Star-Banner.
