ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The Oviedo mother charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of her daughter is now in the Orange County jail.
Sujatha Guduru, 44, will appear in court Thursday morning after spending the past couple of days in the hospital.
Police said Guduru turned the gun on herself after shooting her 17-year-old daughter in the face. Chetana Guduru later died in the hospital.
Sujatha Guduru said she killed her daughter because she believed no one would be able to care for Chetana Guduru after she killed herself, a news release said. It was not immediately known why Sujatha Guduru wanted to kill herself.
Investigators said the Sujatha Guduru planned the murder-suicide for weeks.
Officers said Sujatha Guduru had recently purchased the .38 caliber revolver used in the shooting and also took the time to draft an email to her brother at 5:45 a.m. Monday saying she wanted to hurt herself. She also outlined instructions for her estate.
Sujatha Guduru's brother found her and his niece inside their home on Farmington Court in the Waverlee Woods subdivision. Another relative was sleeping in the home but didn't hear anything.
He found Chetana Guduru on the bed in the master bedroom with a gunshot wound to her head and Sujatha Guduru on the floor with a gunshot wound to her chest.
Sujatha Guduru told police she waited until she thought her daughter had died before shooting herself.
Chetana Guduru was an International Baccalaureate student and a candidate for a national academic award at Seminole High School.
