Man shot multiple times in Palatka parking lot; Police arrive to find large crowd gathered around

PALATKA, Fla.—Several witnesses identified a suspect in the shooting a man in a Palatka parking lot from Sunday, police say.

When authorities were called to the lot of N. 19th Street, they found a large crowd had gathered around a man shot multiple times in his legs. Dennis Shorter Jr., 37, was given first aid and then taken to Putnam Community Medical Center.

Richard Lavell Curry, Jr., 22, of Palatka was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana on Monday, jail records show.

Taking Curry into custody wasn't easy, as officers had to chase him down. When he was in police custody, a search revealed that he had nine round of ammunition, marijuana, cocaine, a ski mask and gloves. On Tuesday, police found a gun in the area where Curry ran.

Curry is being held without bond in the Putnam County Jail.
