Man shot, killed by deputy in Fernandina Beach

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. -- A suspect was shot and killed by a Nassau County deputy during a fight Monday morning.

Nassau Sheriff Bill Leeper said Deputy Wilfred Quick responded to reports that a suspicious man was breaking into homes and cars in the North Hampton subdivision in Fernandina Beach.

When Quick confronted the man around 11 a.m., the suspect attacked Quick, Leeper said.

Quick first tried deploying his Taser to control the suspect, but when this did not work, he fired at the subject.

The suspect, who has not yet been positively identified, died at the scene. Quick was taken to Nassau Baptist Hospital with minor injuries.

Quick, 40, has been working with the NCSO since 2003. He started as a corrections deputy and then became a patrol deputy in 2006.
