HAWTHORNE, Fla. -- Putnam County Sheriff’s Office deputies have arrested and charged 51-year-old Darrell Wayne Bailey with sexual battery, kidnapping, false imprisonment, robbery, battery and fleeing a law enforcement officer.
According to deputies the incident began on the morning of 11/30/2016. According to a press release, Bailey arrived at the west Putnam County home of a female friend and asked to use the telephone. The victim allowed Bailey into her home, at which point he brandished a knife and held it to the throat of the victim. Bailey held the victim against her will and raped her, authorities say.
Still armed with a knife, Bailey then demanded that the victim drive him to an area store. While Bailey was in the store, the victim fled the scene and called 911, deputies report.
While the hunt for Bailey was still active, a carjacking was reported in the area of SE 5TH Street in Interlachen later that day.
Deputies say the eighteen-year-old female victim told deputies that she was approached by a white male suspect as she pulled into her driveway on North State Road 21.
According to the victim, the man deputies report was Bailey, grabbed the teen and placed a knife to her neck. The suspect then entered the vehicle and forced the victim to drive. The victim drove the suspect as he directed for a period of time. The victim then jumped from the moving vehicle and fled into the wooded area. The suspect then fled in the victim’s vehicle.
Within a few minutes, Deputy Nicholas Vieira spotted Bailey still driving the victim’s vehicle west on State Road 20. As Vieira turned around on the vehicle, Bailey accelerated and a vehicle pursuit ensued at speeds of nearly 100 miles per hour. Bailey suddenly stopped the vehicle on State Road 20 near the intersection of Chesser Monroe Road. Vieira was able to apprehend Bailey without further incident.
In addition to the charges filed in Putnam County, deputies discovered that Bailey was wanted on an active Taylor County warrant for violation of probation regarding a previous sexual battery.
Bailey is a Florida registered sex offender resulting from a 1988 Kidnapping and sexual battery in Taylor County.
