CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. -- An Ocala man has been arrested, accused of knowingly transmitting HIV to woman he had sex with back in August last year.
Citrus County Sheriff's investigators say the woman came forward after discovering she contracted the disease when she tried to donate blood back in February this year. The woman says she was contacted by the blood bank that her blood tested positive for HIV. A doctor later confirmed she had indeed contracted the disease.
During the investigation, the woman told detectives she and Samuel Orr had unprotected sex on August 23, 2013, and that she had donated blood in the past and never had any issues prior to the latest attempt. She also said she had not had been sexually active with anyone for 10 years before that encounter with Orr, and that in the months following, she became very sick.
The woman also said a family member of Orr's called her in September last year after learning of their sexual encounter and told her Orr has HIV. The family member then tried to retract the statement saying they lied because they were mad at Orr. When the woman told the family member that she was diagnosed with the disease, the family member then asked her if she was going to press charges against him.
"This question supports the family member's earlier claim that the defendant has HIV or there would not have been a question pertaining to pressing charges against him," the detective noted in the arrest report.
Orr was arrested on Wednesday, July 30 in Crystal River and, during an interview with detectives, Orr reportedly said he told the woman he had HIV. When asked if he was sure, he said "yes".
Also, during the course of the investigation, information was provided to the detective that Orr had additional relationships with other women over the past several years. It is unknown at this time if more victims will come forward as a result of Orr's arrest.
The Sheriff's Office encourages anyone with additional information to contact Det. Kat Powers at 352-249-2730 or Crime Stoppers of Citrus County at 1-888-ANY-TIPS. Tipsters can remain anonymous and be eligible for a cash reward.
