Deputy shoots accused car thief who tried to run him over

A Lee County Sheriff's Office deputy checking on a possible stolen car Sunday shot the driver when he rammed several cruisers and tried to run over deputies.

Deputies were at the Pilot Travel Center at 6050 Plaza Dr. in Fort Myers near Luckett Road and Interstate 75, looking to get information from a driver stopped at a gas pump. As deputies approached the vehicle, the driver rammed two squad cars and attempted to run over deputies in an attempt to get away.

Deputies shot at the subject, who was struck once by gunfire. The accused car thief continued to drive away at a high rate of speed.

A short distance later he crashed the vehicle into a parked truck and ran from the vehicle. Deputies captured him and he was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A female passenger in the vehicle was not injured and is being questioned. No deputies were injured.
