ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. - Authorities determined Wednesday the cause of death for a St. Augustine man found dead in his apartment was a gunshot wound to the chest.

James Henry Weaver, 56, of Los Robles Avenue, was found dead inside a home just after midnight on Tuesday after a friend called the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office saying she couldn't get in contact with him. Deputies found him dead inside his home shortly thereafter but needed an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.

Weaver's longtime roommate, Steven Michael Canard, 55, was killed in a crash that same night on State Road 207. Canard was making a left turn onto Hastings Road when a motorcycle going quickly smashed into the side of his vehicle. Canard's car flipped, ejecting him from it. Highway officials say both Canard and the motorcycle rider were found dead at the scene.

At this time, investigators say they're treating the accidental death of Canard as a coincidence, despite it happening on the same night as Weaver being shot to death. Canard died a few hours before Weaver's body was discovered.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers and sheriff's office detectives are working together to investigate Canard's car and will conduct a forensic sweep of the vehicle. The motorcycle was also taken.

“Those vehicles were secured as part of [FHP's] traffic homicide investigation," Commander Chuck Mulligan with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said. "We now have an interest in at least one of those vehicles, with Mr. Canard, to see if there’s any connections between the two cases as we stand here today.”
