PALATKA, Fla. -- The Palatka Police Department is warning residents to beware of a scam where a friend or family member purports to being abroad, in jail and in need of money.
According to a release from the PPD, the victim got a call on Feb. 1 from someone claiming to be a family friend giving a name that the victim recognized.
The caller told the victim they were in jail in the Dominican Republic on drug charges and needed $1,200 for court costs. Later, the caller put someone on the phone claiming to be an Officer James, who corroborated the caller's story.
The victim was told to go to K-Mart and send the money to a Gabriela Guabavia via Western Union, the release detailed.
The following day, after sending the money as directed, the victim called the family friend who said they hadn't been to the Dominican Republic, or even out of the country.
This is the only case the PPD is aware of. Anyone who gets a similar call is asked to report it to the PPD at (386) 329-0115.
