Officers find $61K in marijuana plants on man's property

BUNNELL, Fla. -- A man is charged with manufacturing marijuana after investigators found 61 marijuana plants on his property in the 5600 block of Nutwood Avenue Wednesday.

Law enforcement officers were acting on a tip when they asked to search the home of Dwayne Reed, 49, according to a release from Flagler County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Commander Bob Weber.

The plants, which have an estimated street value of $61,000, were found behind Reed's residence and in two "grow rooms," which had fans, ballasts and high-voltage lights.

Reed told the officers that he does not distribute the marijuana but uses it himself to treat a previous injury.

"It is hard to believe any one person could conceivably try to claim that growing 61 marijuana plants was purely for personal use," said Sheriff James L. Manfre in the release. "We'll have to wait and see how the case unfolds once it's in the courts."
